Tax and Regulate Cannabis 2010, the California ballot initiative that would legalize and regulate marijuana in California, submitted about 700,000 signatures today ensuring its place on the November ballot. California would become the first state in the U.S. to legalize, regulate and tax cannabis for adults 21 and over if passed. Richard Lee, an Oakland cannabis entrepreneur and founder of Oaksterdam University is sponsoring the bill along with Jeff Jones, Executive Director of the Patient ID Center, formally known as the Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative. The two have been instrumental in helping to revitalize downtown Oakland through cannabis based businesses. Oakland is now known as “Oaksterdam,” the Amsterdam of the West.
I met Jeff Jones this morning at Oaksterdam University’s Los Angeles campus to photograph and film the historic moment. As we cruised to the county registrars office in Norwalk, Jeff talked about the 1000s of jobs the legal cannabis industry would create, the billions in tax dollars generated, and the elimination of arrests for adult cannabis users. "It is difficult for even conservatives to say no to taxing cannabis during such economic times," said Mr. Jones.
When we finally arrived, we met Howard Dillon, a campaign worker who delivered the 143,000 Los Angeles County signatures in 17 boxes, weighing in around 750 Lbs. Judge James Gray, a retired Orange County Judge, and outspoken advocate for Cannabis legalization, was also there to help unload and show support.
It was a successful day for cannabis advocates in California.
The next step: Tax, Regulate, and Legalize it. If you are a registered California Voter, and want to end cannabis prohibition, please remember to show up in the voting booth in November and make it happen. Yes We Cannabis!
